Student Handout — Friction and Smart Spending (Week 8)

Take This Home

This handout summarizes what we learned in Week 8. Share it with your family!

What Is Spending Friction?

Friction is anything that slows you down before you spend money. Friction is actually helpful — it gives you time to think.

Examples of Friction

More Friction (Slower)Less Friction (Faster)
Paying with cash (you see the money leave)One-click online buying
Walking to a storeShopping from your couch
Counting out exact changeTapping a phone to pay
Waiting a day before buying"Buy now!" buttons

Why it matters: When spending is too easy and fast, people sometimes buy things they did not really want or need.

The Fast vs. Pause Test

Before you buy something, try this quick test:

QuestionYour Answer
Do I need this or want this?
Will I still want this in one week?
Is this the best use of my money right now?
What else could I do with this money? (opportunity cost)

If you answered "want," "maybe not," or "not sure" to any question — pause and wait.

Personal Friction Strategies

Pick one or two strategies to use when you feel the urge to buy something:

  • The 24-hour rule — Wait one full day before buying. If you still want it tomorrow, reconsider.
  • 📝 The list check — Only buy things that are already on your list.
  • 💬 The talk-it-out rule — Tell someone what you want to buy and why. Saying it out loud helps you think.
  • 🧮 The math check — Calculate how long it took to earn that money. Is the item worth that many hours?
  • 🎯 The goal check — Look at your savings goal. Does this purchase help or hurt it?

Staying Safe as a Consumer

A consumer is anyone who buys things. Even kids are consumers! Here is how to be a smart one:

Watch Out For

  • Ads disguised as content — Some videos, games, and social media posts are actually advertisements.
  • "Limited time" pressure — If a deal says "buy NOW or it's gone," that is a trick to remove your friction.
  • In-app purchases — Games that are "free" but charge real money for items inside.
  • Subscription traps — "Free trial" offers that start charging you if you forget to cancel.

Smart Consumer Habits

  • Always ask a trusted adult before making any purchase online.
  • Read the price carefully — look for hidden fees.
  • Ask yourself: "Would I buy this if I had to walk to a store and pay cash?"

Talk About It at Home

  1. Has anyone in our family ever bought something and regretted it? What happened?
  2. What friction strategies does our family already use?
  3. Can you spot an ad that is trying to remove friction? (Look at your favorite app or website.)
